DANDRUFF
Dandruff is one of the most common hair problems that most people experience today, and it has affected nearly everyone at some point in their lives. It is defined as a little white particle of dead skin that is found in or on people's hair. It manifests as flaking, scaling, and itching. The particles clump together as they fall off the scalp, appearing white, flayed, and all too visible, which can be quite embarrassing at times.
Don't worry; it's neither contagious nor harmful and can be cured with the right treatment at the right time. The problem is that people only go to the doctor when the dandruff problem is getting worse or when they are losing too much hair because of dandruff, which is wrong. If you get the right treatment at the right time in the early stages of dandruff, it can be healed and will never escalate to more serious skin issues. In this blog post, we'll look at what dandruff is, what causes it, and what natural remedies and ayurvedic medicine for dandruff can be used.
In the Ayurvedic medical system, dandruff is commonly known as Darunaka. It is a condition of a scalp disease in which dead tissue from the scalp sheds and its symptoms include itching, hair dryness, and scalp skin fall. It is caused by a Vata or Kapha Dosha imbalance. If you notice dry dandruff, it signifies the 'Vata Pradhan Kapha Dosha', and when you see wet or damp dandruff, it signifies the ‘Kapha Pradhan Vata Dosha’. When the Vata and Pitta doshas increase and Rakhtadhatu decreases in the body, it results in blood impurities, inadequate nourishment of the scalp, and dandruff. Both the treatments and home remedies suggested by Ayurveda can be useful in curing both types of dandruff.
Here are some home remedies that can help cure Dandruff:
1. Tea Tree Oil
One of the most effective treatments for fighting the specific strain of fungus that can cause dandruff. It is preferable to dilute Tea Tree Oil with a carrier oil such as coconut oil and then apply it straight to the scalp.
2. Curd and Sandalwood Paste
Curd (Dahi) and Sandalwood (Chandan) powder paste are considered to be the most effective in treating fungal infections of the scalp. Apply the paste to your hair and leave it on for 20 minutes before washing it.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is often used as a herbal remedy to treat dandruff. The acidity of the vinegar is believed to help stimulate the shedding of dead skin cells on the scalp. It also balances the pH of the skin, helps reduce fungal growth and so combats dandruff. Apply the apple cider vinegar to the scalp after diluting it.
4. Garlic (Lehsun)
Garlic is an extremely effective anti-fungal natural product. For immediate results, pound a clove or two of garlic and apply it to your scalp after mixing it with water. If you feel uncomfortable with the smell of garlic, mix a little honey into the prepared mask.
5. Shikakai Mask
Shikakai is believed to be really effective for treating chronic dandruff caused by excess oil on the scalp. It has a unique ability to cleanse without irritating the scalp. Take a bowl and mix shikakai with fenugreek seeds and mint leaves. Soak them in water, grind them and apply the mixture to the scalp before sleep, wash with lukewarm water in the morning.
6. Neem & Lemon Mask
Neem has antimicrobial properties that can help fight dandruff, and lemons contain vitamin C, citric acid, flavonoids, and iron, all of which are vital for hair and skin health. Make a paste of neem leaves. Add the juice of half a lemon to it and apply the paste to the scalp. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash it with a gentle shampoo. Use it three times a week for best results.
7. Wheat Germ Oil
Wheat Germ Oil contains healthy components that transport vital nutrients to hair roots or follicles, promoting hair growth and thickness, and effectively removing dandruff and flaky scalp. Lukewarm the wheat germ oil, massage with a light hand, leave it for an hour and then wash your hair with water.
8. Pomegranate Mask
Pomegranate is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties that can help soothe an irritated scalp and help people deal with scalp issues like dandruff. Take a tablespoon of crushed pomegranate bark (Anar peel powder) and 300 ml of coconut oil. Then, mix them and boil the mixture for 15-20 minutes. Lastly, strain and filter it. The filtered product can be used as a massage over the scalp and washed off after 20 minutes.
